To reverse significant degradation and blend environmental conservation with sustainable urban development, a comprehensive regeneration program was implemented. This ensured the protection and enhancement of endangered flora and fauna, whilst also changing the former shell grit mined areas into lots, roads and parkland.
The 5.5 km waterway has been designed to meet sustainable environmental regulations. It features a tidally driven, one-way flow system that maintains water quality and water flow whilst supporting biodiversity for the waterway environment and the wider area including the Moonah Woodland and Coastal Saltmarsh.
Innovative construction techniques were developed for the excavation and placement of over one million cubic metres of soil to meet the projected 800mm sea level rise. The Ramsar-listed Swan Bay and critically endangered flora and fauna were safeguarded through the management of acid sulfate soils and sediment.
Extensive flora and fauna habitats within the 59-hectare conservation reserve have been preserved and protected, including habitats for endangered species and migratory birds. Over 120,000 seedlings have been planted, with revegetation efforts supported by propagating plants from seeds sourced on-site.
